1. Made of PVC? How does that work? In short, it does and produces a larger capacity cargo rack that is lighter weight and costs less than typical cargo racks on the market. It is designed to provide a cargo rack product light enough to take on and off as needed with an eye on a future of small, fuel efficient cars which don't have a lot of trunk space. However there will still be the need for lots of storage space, especially families with small children. As well, the design goal was to produce a cargo rack product with off the shelf, tried and true materials used for a new purpose or performing a different function.

PVC Pipe is a well developed and standardized material. We use Schedule 40 pipe which is more than adequate for the loads applied to it in this case. To further provide an additional a structural system in addition to the outer, relatively rigid PVC pipe, we utilize an internal, interconnected skeleton of twisted wire cable which runs through the perimeter top and bottom members of the rack as well as intermediate side and bottom members. This is redundant strengthening of the rack system but also compensates for our decision to not glue the pipe fitting connections. We chose not to glue the joints for ease of construction and maintenance or repair down the road. If you have ever worked with PVC pipe and slip (non-threaded) fittings, you know that it's a pretty secure connection. One cannot count on that strong initial friction to last forever so that is why we went with the internal wire framework.

Since it is standard PVC schedule 40 pipe, we paint the white pipe with a 2 step process of using a paint adhesion enhancing agent for plastic before applying paint. So far our "scrape and rub off" finish have shown the final coat to be durable. Our current models come with rope hooks attached at the top corners and connected to the internal wire skeleton however future models may instead come with carabiners for tying down loads.

2. How does your cargo rack connect to my existing rack? Our cargo rack sits on top of your existing rack and connects to it with steel square U-bolts. U-bolts have been around a long time and while not the most elegant solution, are a practical and highly effective connector in this situation. You simply need an adjustable wrench or pliers to tighten the nuts on the threaded legs of the U-bolt. A flat metal plate is tighened up underneath your rack by the U-bolt nuts.

Please note our cargo rack is intended to provide lots of extra storage space but you do need an existing base rack. If you do not have a rack at all for our product to attach to, there are many products on the market from which to choose as well as some great (but usually considerably more expensive) cargo racks. URL's of some of the more well known are listed below and we're sure there are lots more: Thule Yakima Barrecrafters.
